Marriage and Family Therapist

Job Summary:

Our Family therapist helps family members understand each other and work through difficult feelings in a safe space. This type of therapy focuses on improving the interactions and communication between family members. It is usually used when the family is contributing to a person’s difficulties or when one person’s problems are impacting other family members. When each person feels supported and works within their strengths, positive changes in relationships and in people’s lives will hopefully result.

Canoe Therapy is an interdisciplinary pediatric therapy team of Speech-Language Pathology, Psychology, Occupational Therapy, Counselling and Behaviour Therapy. We value a family-centered care approach, considering the child and family as a whole and working in collaboration as a team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Client Assessment: Conduct detailed assessments of family systems, relationships, and individual needs to develop tailored treatment plans.
  • Marriage and Family Therapy: Provide individual, couple, and family therapy using evidence-based models such as Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Structural Family Therapy, or Solution-Focused Therapy.
  • Relational Issues: Address common relational concerns such as communication difficulties, conflict resolution, intimacy issues, infidelity, divorce, blended family challenges, and parenting concerns.
  • Crisis Intervention: Offer support during family crises such as marital separation, loss, illness, or trauma, helping clients manage emotional stress and transition effectively.

Qualifications:

  • Current registration with the Ontario College of Social Work and Social Service Workers or the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario and a certificate in Marriage and Family Therapist (RMFT)
  • Proven experience working with couples and families, with expertise in addressing relational, emotional, and psychological issues.
  • Strong knowledge of family systems theory and experience with various therapeutic modalities (e.g., Emotionally Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport and trust with clients.
  • Compassionate, client-centered approach with sensitivity to cultural, socio-economic, and individual differences.
  • Ability to manage sensitive family dynamics and maintain professionalism in high-stress situations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Additional certification or training in specific therapeutic modalities (e.g., Gottman Method, Narrative Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy).
  • Experience working with trauma, grief, infidelity, divorce, or mental health disorders within the context of family and relationships.
  • Bilingual or multilingual proficiency is a plus.
